What is World Rainforest Day?
World Rainforest Day is an Initiative launched in 2017 by Rainforest Partnership in close collaboration with a coalition of partners around the globe committed to the conservation of rainforests.
Conceived as a movement – not just a single day of action – World Rainforest Day informs the global community on all aspects related to rainforests, raising global awareness around their role as critical ecosystems for the health of our planet and the need to protect them urgently, effectively and together.
It creates a wave moving from inspiration to action - to activate more and more diverse individuals and organizations around the world to take action in their own fields and communities.
World Rainforest Day 2021
In 2021, WRD convened 150+ partners from research and academia to civil society, public institutions, the private sector, activism, and arts.
We introduced Rainforest Ambitions (June 20-22, 2021), a global summit for and by rainforest guardians, environmental defenders, and passionate individuals - the first of its kind.
Rainforest Ambitions:
- Powered by 45 orgs convened by WRD, with attendees from all 6 populated continents.
- Three days of programming including panels, roundtable discussions with experts, live workshops, wellness sessions, children’s events, and even a cooking class.
This is the stage we set - convening a centralized global event that made it possible for anyone to access the rich, diverse content and community, creating a space for knowledge exchange that simply didn’t exist before.
Protected Together. Now. Forever
This was the theme of World Rainforest Day 2021.
The theme is a reflection of three key areas that need to be reinforced for more effective rainforest conservation and restoration:
- Strong collaboration across borders, backgrounds, cultures, sectors (Protected Together)
- The need to urgently turn ambitions into actions (Now)
- The need to turn actions into sustained, demonstrable, positive impact (Forever)
The First Annual Rainforest Ambitions Global Summit
From podcasts, to panels, films, concerts, cocktails, storytelling and youth-led actions for forests, each Rainforest Ambitions event brought people together from all around the world and from all walks of life-- building relationships, networks, sparking ideas and partnerships, and moving us closer to our common goals of protected and thriving rainforests.
We gained 71 new partners in 2021 from around the world.
- We reached 29 Million people through social media, outreach campaigns, and the virtual nature of Rainforest Ambitions
- For example: Just three TikTok influences alone gave 432,000 young people exposure to World Rainforest Day content
- Major and international news articles about World Rainforest Day spread awareness to hundreds of millions more people. For example, this article by CNN had 569.7 Million potential impressions, based on their average website traffic
