Even amid a global pandemic, Rainforest Partnerhip's Peru-based projects team has been extremely busy working with dozens of partners and projects around the country.
Earlier this month, RP’s Peru Team partnered with the Junín National Reserve, Yunkawasi, Grupo Rana, the Denver Zoo, and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, to create a virtual program celebrating 46 years of the Reserve's conservation work in the region. The program made the biodiversity of the region accessible to people all around the country and world.
The Junín National Reserve is celebrating 46 years protecting the biodiversity of Lake Chinchaycocha in central Peru. The Junín National Reserve is a Protected Natural Area and is located in the middle of the Peruvian Andes.
The Reserve contains great biodiversity, being home to many endemic and endangered species. Lake Chinchaycocha is its most alluring attraction, and the giant Junín frog lives only among its icy waters.
The program, which was hosted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was full of diverse activities. From discussion sessions on the biodiversity, history, and traditions of the Peruvian Andes, short stories told by children who live by Lake Chinchaycocha, a virtual tour bringing the lake's beauty to audiences during the pandemic, the presentation of the book “Reserva Nacional de Junín. Un espejo en medio de los Andes” (Junín National Reserve. A mirror in the middle of the Andes), to the celebration of two art contests related to the biodiversity of the Reserve. All of these events made August an exciting month dedicated to commemorating 46 years of work in favor of the conservation of this important and majestic landscape.
